Text and email about Section 8 housing turned out to be a scam

I got a text from a number with a 317 area code saying they were a verified landlord. It seemed legit so I replied. Then I got an email from someone pretending to be my Section 8 worker. The email was from [email protected] and they had a website affordable housing.com.

They said I needed to send money to secure the place. I sent $2800 total. The address they gave was in Los Angeles, CA 90001 but I'm not even sure that's real.

After I sent the money I tried to call back at (317) 318-8254 and no one answered. I tried emailing too. Nothing. I realized it was all fake. They were never a landlord or my case worker. I just feel stupid for falling for it.
