Interview on Zoom turned into check deposit scheme

AMGEN reached out to me about a work from home job, $37/hr and $19/hr for training. I thought the pay sounded good so I did the interview through Zoom, just messaging back and forth. They offered me the job and then said they'd email me a check for $1400 to deposit and I'd pay a vendor with it.

I told him I didn't have enough in my bank to cover that and he said they'd take $75 out of my check each week to pay back what I was short. I kept asking if this was legal and he said yes but my gut said no. I backed out and never printed or deposited the check. I'm sure he's still waiting for me to do it but I'm not.
