Job offer with checks turned into gift card loss

I was contacted by this company AMPEL Biosolutions about a CSR position. They said they would send me money to buy the work equipment and materials I needed. So they sent me 2 checks to deposit. First they told me to set up a cash-pay account but that didn't work. Then they asked me to buy gift cards with the money from the checks and give them to the vendor once the equipment arrived.

After 3 days I started feeling weird about it because they never sent me any work documents or the equipment. What they did was reverse the check payments and took the balances on those gift cards. This all happened after I told them I wasn't going to buy any more gift cards or use their iphone for tracking. They got me for $2,720 and now I'm stuck with useless gift cards and an overdraft on my account. PLEASE BE AWARE!
