Phone call saying we qualified for loan modification

Mike Miller called saying he was with the loss mitigation department for our mortgage company. He told us we qualified for a loan modification program. He said we needed to make 3 payments on a trial period through Walmart money services. He even generated the bar code for us to save the 70 dollar Walmart fee. We made the 3 payments and let our mortgage get in critical condition with the lender. When I contacted the mortgage company they told me our mortgage isn't in loss mitigation, it's in collections and near repo status.
