Job offer turned into a check scam on Microsoft Teams

I applied for a remote data entry job that was posted on Glassdoor. It said Ohio Valley Eye Institute was hiring. Seemed legit at first. They emailed me and then moved everything over to Microsoft Teams.

They had me fill out a form to order equipment that the company was supposed to pay for. In the confirmation email, it said two items were out of stock until late next month. For me, it was a MacBook Pro and an automated time tracker. The person I was talking to apologized and said the only way to fix it was to send me a check so I could buy the items myself.

I told them I wasn't comfortable with that because I know about those faulty check scams. I asked if there was another way. They said no. I pushed back again saying I was just being careful, and that's when they deleted all their messages and blocked me. No more contact after that.
