Lost $1600 after calling a fake American Airlines number

I called what I thought was American Airlines because I canceled a flight and never got my refund or points. I wanted to see if anything could be done. The person told me if I upgraded my ticket to business class, I could then cancel for a full refund. They said only business class tickets can get four refunds. They said I had to make a payment for $1600 and it would be refunded right away, along with the $400 from my original ticket.

The next day my credit card company sent an alert. It turns out the person I spoke to was a scammer. I called the real American Airlines and spoke to a customer service rep. They told me they had no information about a new ticket being purchased or any payments. Nothing. The money is just gone.
