Job offer asked for my social security number

They emailed me about a remote job and I applied. The whole thing seemed fine at first, they were offering me the position pretty quick. I gave them my ID and my social security number because they said it was for the background check.

After I sent it, I just got a weird feeling about it. I didn't hear anything else from them. The email address was [email protected], which now doesn't seem right for a real company. I'm worried about what they might do with my info.
