Rental listing asked for my Social Security number and drivers license

I found an apartment on apartments.com and clicked apply. Next thing I know I get an email from someone acting like the rental realtor. I filled out the whole application form and gave them my drivers license and Social Security number.

Then I got another email with a weird PayPal link to pay a $45 application fee. That’s when I realized something was off and stopped. Their website is brighamrealtors.com and their number is (415) 854-2796. I didn’t lose any money but they have my personal info.

Paid a rental application fee but something didn't seem right

I was looking for a place to rent and found the website brighamrealtors.com. They had some listings in my area. They told me I couldn't see the unit until I finished a screening application. So I filled it out and gave them my social security number, pay stubs, and my driver's license.

After that, they said I had to pay a $45 processing fee through PayPal. My card wouldn't let me send the full amount, so I only sent $5. Then they insisted they would keep processing my application even without the full payment. That's when I started to feel like something was off. It just didn't make sense.
