Scammed out of $230 for tools that were supposedly free

I got an email at work, it looked like it was from a woman I know. It said someone named [email protected] had her late father's tools to give away. I contacted that Anne person and she told me to get in touch with the moving company in Ohio that had the stuff. So I emailed [email protected].

They said there were shipping charges of $400. I said that was way too much for free tools. Then Anne contacted me again and said storage fees were included and that she would pay those, so the shipping was now $230. I paid that through Venmo.

Then I get another email from Anne saying her family decided to sell the tools instead and give the money to foster homes. She asked if I'd pay $500 for them. That's when I finally started looking into this. The woman from work who supposedly sent the first email never sent it. They just used her name. I sent them a pretty angry email and haven't heard back since.
