Someone emailed pretending to be my family in trouble

I got an email from [email protected] saying it was a family member who needed help. They made it sound like an emergency so I sent $300 through PayPal. I thought I was helping someone I knew.

After I sent the money I changed my PayPal password and email address but they still took the money out anyway. I don't understand how that happened. I changed everything and it still went through. Now I'm out the $300 and I don't know what else to do about it.
