Job offer that asked for my Social Security number for a background check

I saw a job posting on Indeed and applied. Got an email back from someone named Alan Roach at vitalnexacare.com saying I was hired and needed to do a background check right away. They asked for my Social Security number and some other personal info. It felt strange but I needed work so I went along with it.

Then they said I had to pay for the background check myself. I sent $29.00. After that I never heard back. No start date, no reply to my emails. The phone number they gave 1(347) 632-5622 just rings and rings.

I looked up the address they had listed in Thornton, CO and it doesn't seem like a real office. I think I got scammed out of my money and now my Social Security number is out there too.
