Rented a Marco Island condo then the landlord disappeared after I asked for a refund

I found a condo rental in Marco Island after searching online and a person calling themselves Joseph Silva emailed me. Said they had a place at Tradewinds available for February and March 2027, which is what I needed. We agreed on everything, signed a contract. The contract said I could cancel up to 7 days before move in and get a full refund.

So I wired a $6,000 deposit to their bank. A few days later on June 23, 2026 I emailed them saying I wanted to cancel just like the contract said and asked for my refund. The person tried to talk me into keeping the rental but I said no and demanded my money back. After that they just stopped replying to me completely.

I honestly don't know if this was the real owner or someone stealing their identity. The email was [email protected] and they listed an address at 180 Seaview CT in Marco Island, FL. Phone number was (678) 646-7878. But now nobody will answer me.
