Job offer from a professor turned out to be a fake check scam

I got an email from someone saying they were a professor stuck abroad during the pandemic. They offered me an assistant job. Sounded legit at first. They said they were quarantined and needed help with some stuff.

They sent me a check and asked me to use the money to buy gift cards for students overseas. Also said to send part of it to their landlord for rent. I deposited the check and did what they asked. Then the check bounced the next day. I was out $2700.

Now the email and phone number they used don't work anymore. The phone was (909) 251-7832 and they gave an address in Orlando but it's probably fake too. I feel stupid but I really needed work at the time.
