Paid $2000 for an item I never got and the seller kept making up excuses

I got into a transaction on Facebook Marketplace with someone who said their name was Rachel Clark. She wanted me to use Zelle but I don’t have that so I did Chime instead. First I paid $1100 in gift cards. Then she kept saying I needed more for tools and shipping so I ended up sending another $900, $250 of that was just for shipping.

First she said the item was delayed because her son was in the hospital. Then she said she was hospitalized. Then she said her son died. Then the courier messed up the package. Then she said she found a lawyer who would take the case for $700. After that she just stopped answering. I sent money to a few different names too – Kaitlin Scott, Susan Plog, Julie Gunter.

I feel really stupid for falling for this. I’ve done lots of marketplace deals before and never had anything like this happen.
