Bought a temporary tag online and got my car impounded

I found this company through someone who said they were legit. I just needed a temporary tag while I was waiting for my title and registration to come in the mail. So I paid them $130 and thought everything was fine.

Then I got pulled over by the police. They took my car and impounded it. Now I have to go to court and they are trying to throw criminal charges at me. I tried calling and emailing the company but nobody answers. The website is still up though. I just wanted a legal tag, not all this trouble.
