Got asked for an illegal good faith deposit for an apartment

I was looking at an apartment and the company, staybk.nyc, asked me for a good faith deposit. I know that's illegal here in NYC. It felt off, so I looked them up.

I found out they're tied to another company called RentBK LLC. Seems like they do the exact same thing. That company has only 1.7 stars on Google, with a bunch of people saying it's a scam.

The contact was a guy named Ron Levi at [email protected], and the address they gave was 521 Dekalb Ave in Brooklyn. Their phone number is (718) 414-2772. I didn't send any money, but the whole thing just doesn't seem right.
