Paid $40k for two websites and now they want more money

My girlfriend told me about this website developer. I paid $40k for two websites. Now the developer is asking for another $5k to finish the job. No warning about it.

I paid by check. The money did not go straight to the girlfriend. It went to her aunt. The aunt put it in a credit union. Then the girlfriend sent crypto to the developer. I don't know where my money is. The websites are not done.
