My mom got a fake mortgage check in the mail that looks real

My mother got this piece of mail. It says "time sensitive notice" and "information for the mortgage" on it, and that an immediate response is requested. When you open it, there's something that looks exactly like a check for $195. But instead of "pay to the order of," it says "allocated waiver." Where her name should be, it just says "to the order of."

It has a computer-generated signature from William H. Keating. Right below the signature, in small print, it says "this is not a check." And above the check amount, it repeats "allocated waiver." At the very bottom of this fake check, it even says "not affiliated with your lender." The whole thing is designed to trick you. It came from an address in Sacramento, CA. It just feels like a really deceptive piece of mail meant to confuse people about their mortgage.

Got a weird final notice letter with a fake check inside

I got this letter in the mail that says "Immediate response to this notice requested" and "final notice" all over it. It's really aggressive. There's a check attached for $195, but right on it, it says "This is not a check" and "Allocated Waiver." That doesn't make any sense.

It's signed by someone named William H. Keating. The return address is San Antonio, TX and there's a phone number: 1-800-202-6231. The whole thing feels off. I never signed up for anything from them. It just showed up and it looks like a scam to get you to call that number.
